Weekend Fisherman

Time to check and double check.

Spring is officially here are you ready? There are many things you should remember even before you go out for the first time.

1. Line make sure that you respool being careful to not over fill.

2. Reel cleaning, if you have older reels that you just cannot part with, make sure to clean and oil them. Make sure to check your rods over also, giving attention to the guides.

3. It is a great time to clean out your tackle box, if you are anything like me, you find things in it that don't need to be there. This can also include restocking it with your most commonly used tackle.

4. I usually take the time to rig a few soft plastic grubs so that they are ready to go.

5. Last but not least, make a plan of action, write down the places that you would like to go, being specific with areas of the lake or river you want to make sure and hit.

Ice Out Fishing

OK, I know that for us up here in the frozen north winter isn't officially over yet. That doesn't mean it isn't time to start thinking about getting ready for spring fishing. Right after the ice goes out is a perfect time to get out to that shore line or even get the boat out for some pre-spawn panfish fishing. It is a perfect way to get rid of those winter blues. We prefer to fish from the shore in early spring as that is generally where the water is the warmest. When we talk early spring fishing warmer water is key. As the water slowly warms remember that in most bodies of water it is the northern end that warms fastest. Where the water is warmer, the under water plants start to grow and the fish have a place not only for cover but food also.
